What do these metrics mean?

  • Net profit

Your real profit after every cost is deducted: COGS, shipping, ads and payment fees. It is the most important number for any ecommerce operator.

  • Net margin

The percentage of your revenue that remains as profit. It shows how much of every euro of revenue actually stays with you.

  • Contribution margin

Margin before ad spend. It shows how profitable the business would be without marketing and is crucial for scaling decisions.

  • Blended ROAS (net) and break-even ROAS

Blended ROAS is net revenue (excluding VAT) divided by total ad spend. A blended ROAS of 3x means each euro of ad budget returns three euros of net revenue. Whether that is enough is shown by the break-even ROAS: net revenue divided by contribution before ads. When blended ROAS is above it, the contribution covers the ad spend.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Shopify profit?
Subtract all variable costs such as COGS, shipping, ad spend and payment fees from your revenue. The result is your net profit, and this calculator does that automatically for you.
What is a good blended ROAS for Shopify?
There is no fixed good number. What matters is the break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your contribution margin: at a 40% contribution margin it is 2.5. Your blended ROAS (net revenue divided by ad spend) has to be above it for ads to pay for themselves. Fixed costs are not yet covered at that point.
Which payment fees apply on Shopify?
Shopify Payments typically charges between 1.5% and 2.9% plus a fixed fee per transaction depending on your plan. PayPal and other providers have their own fee structures.
What is the difference between net margin and contribution margin?
Net margin includes all costs including advertising. Contribution margin shows profitability before ad spend, which helps you judge how scalable the business really is.
